Scarce accounts of Anglo-Bhutanese relations at the time of the Anglo-Bhutan War of 1864-65, including Sir Ashley Eden's failed mission to Bhutan in 1863-64. Eden was sent to negotiate with the Bhutanese regarding the harbouring of Sikkimese dissidents and free trade but as the mission was unarmed he was forced into signing a humliating treaty, which resulted in the war with Britain and subsequent ceeding of territory.
