worked in fine cross-stitch in black thread, with a quotation entitled 'Virtue', with name, place, and date below, all within an oval border, some minor wear to linen and loss of a few threads in places, 30 x 25cm (12 x 10ins), oval gilt frame, glazed
Rebecca Johnson came from Chesterfield and attended Ackworth School between 1807/8 and 1810. The quotation reads: Virtue is that perfect good which is the crown of a happy life, the only immortal thing that belongs to mortality it is an invincible greatness of mind, not to be elevated or dejected by good or ill fortune, it is sociable and gentle, free, steady and fearless, content within itself, and full of inexhaustible delights.'
