2023 has proved to be a remarkable year in the annals of Dominic Winter Auctioneers, the highlight of which was the spectacular first portion of the Foyle Library sale (27th September). It was a privilege and a delight for our expert staff to handle such a remarkable variety of treasures, ranging from medieval Books of Hours to an original illustration by the Winnie-the-pooh illustrator E. H. Shepard.

As 2023 comes to an end, we look back at another successful year for our Aviation & Military History, Medals & Militaria specialist sales. The May auction included the Tonbridge Battle of Britain collection. A private collection formed by Malcolm Pettit over a 50-year period and housed in a barn at the bottom of his garden. Malcolm was one of the last “great excavators”, tracing aircraft crash sites and recovering Spitfire, Hurricane and Luftwaffe relics.

This is an original drawing of the final book illustration of Pooh and Piglet in the Hundred Acre Wood from A.A. Milne's first book about Pooh, Winnie-the-Pooh (1926). This signed pen and ink drawing is dated 1958 and was recently discovered in the collection of the late Christopher Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey, near Maldon in Essex. An earlier 1925 original drawing of the same scene was sold by Bonham’s (New York) for $220,000 in 2022.
