Coverdale's New Testament
A highlight of our forthcoming January sale will be a copy of Miles Coverdale's landmark translation of the New Testament, dated 1538. Despite being incomplete, the black letter text volume with woodcut illustrations, published during the period of crisis initiated by Henry VIII's conflict with the Church of Rome, is a powerful reminder that many lives were lost in bringing the Bible to us in our own English 'moder tonge'. Coverdale used much of William Tyndale's translation in preparing his version, and Tyndale's final prophetic words before being killed as a martyr, "Lord, open the King of England's eyes", were realised when a few years later Coverdale's Bible was placed in every church across England. Estimate: £800-1200
