WWII – Germany Border Crossing Sign. An original painted wooden sign, probably from the Dutch or Belgian border with Germany, circa 1945, painted in red and white on a black background, with English, French and Dutch text in stencilled capital letters, reading (in translation), ‘German Border. Persons who enter Germany without Military Government Authority will be Imprisoned’, a total of eleven lines and apparently lacking the heading and first line of the top English version, 147 x 120.5cm

Provenance: Acquired by a Dutch collector, the sign dates from circa 1945. The grammatical use of the Dutch language version of the text suggests a Flemish translation and the sign was therefore planted somewhere along the Dutch or Belgian border with Germany.
