Saul Baizerman was born in Vitebsk, Russia, in 1889, and was involved in the early stages of the Bolshevik revolution, for which cause he and his brother robbed a bank in 1906. He escaped from jail with the assistance of his father and fled to the United States, where he settled in New York and trained as a sculptor at various art schools. He began to work directly on metal sculpture while studying in Paris in 1925, and developed a technique of beating copper with a hammer to produce figurative shapes. His work tends to focus on working class subjects, such as the series of small-scale statuettes in bronze and plaster he produced under the heading 'The City and The People' and 'Labor'. With accompanying letter to Frank McEwen from the Museum of Modern Art, New York, relating to the present work, dated February 24, 1987.

Braaq (really Brian Shields, 1951-1997). Industrial town in winter, with crowded street scene, oil on board, with representation of the artist as a boy in a striped jumper (as often), signed 'braaq', and additionally marked 'Ann' to lower right, 29 x 35.5 cm (11.5 x 14 ins), gilt frame
Brian Shields was born in Liverpool and is best known for painting industrial scenes of northern Britain. The unusual name of 'braaq' is a mispelling of the famous French artist Braque which, on account of his artistic talent as a boy, was his nickname at school. His father, Dennis Shields, was a highly regarded artist but was unable to support his twelve children through painting alone, and Brian's eldest brother pursued a successful career in America as a sculptor. However, Brian was discouraged from becoming a professional artist and after leaving school became a trainee chef in a somewhat drab hotel in Harrogate. In an attempt to brighten the place he painted a mural. This mural caused a great deal of interest in the area but as he had signed it 'braaq', the true identity of the artist remained a mystery until a local journalist identified Brian Shields as the painter. He became an overnight sensation, holding his first exhibition in 1974. In 1977 he was invited to hold his first of four exhibitions in London's West End, which was a sell-out. It was after this exhibition that 'The Times' described him as "one of the six most successful artists in England", and 'The Liverpool Echo' described him as "Liverpool's Lowry", referring to the similarity in style between his work and that of L.S. Lowry. His paintings teem with life, and the figures, though stylised, have animation, mischievousness and vivacity. In the late 1970s Braaq's sister, Ann, died at the young age of 21. In memory of her his subsequent paintings are signed with both his signature and "Ann". He is known for painting himself into many of his works as a small boy wearing a black and white striped jumper and wellingtons, as here. In 1997, at the age of 46, Brian died of a brain haemorrhage, leaving a contribution to the art world which ranks him among the leading artists in the country.

Herda (Franz, 1887-1965). Portrait of Albert Einstein in his study, at the Institute for Advanced Studies, Princeton, 1949, oil on canvas, signed, 56 x 46 cm (22 x 18 ins), framed, with signature in ink of Albert Einstein attached to the lower edge of the frame, behind a perspex mount
Provenance: By descent from the artist to the present owner (further documentation available on request). Franz Herda (1887-1965) the Munich painter, was born in New York, and studied at the academies in Berlin (where he was taught by Max Liebermann), Paris and Munich. Having seen active service as a fighter pilot in the first world war, he lived briefly in Berlin and then in Berg, Bavaria, maintaining a studio in Munich-Schwabing, producing portraits and impressionist landscapes, and from 1930 to around 1942, was Professor at the Hannover Art Academy. Herda took an active part in the Resistance to the Nazi regime in the late 1930s and early 1940s, helping Jewish and other political refugees to avoid capture. One of these, Albertine Gimpel was to become his wife in 1948. Despite the destruction of some of Herda's output in the bombings of Munich during 1943, the Lenbachhaus in Munich holds one of his impressionist landscapes from circa 1933-34, entitled Winter Sunshine, which was purchased directly from the artist in 1936. The artist was introduced to Albert Einstein during a visit to the USA in late 1948/early 1949 by a mutual friend, Dr Bucky (1880-1963), and was allowed to paint Einstein's portrait over three days in 1949. A preparatory study, dated Princeton 1949, is now in the collection of the Bern Historisches Museum. Through contact with Einstein, Herda received a number of other commissions for portraits from the academic community in Princeton. The present work, a masterly portrayal of the great genius of 20th century science, shows him in relaxed mood, seated in his study at Princeton, with his pipe and a tin of Bond Street tobacco beside him. While many photographs of Einstein by the likes of Lotte Jacobi and Yousuf Karsh are celebrated and well-known, original portraits of Einstein drawn or painted from life are very rare and even more rarely available on the open market. The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington own a half-length oil portrait on canvas by Max Westfield (1882-1971), painted in 1944 and given by the artist as a gift to the Smithsonian Institution in 1967; a pencil on paper drawing and an oil on burlap modernist style portrait by Josef Scharl (1896-1954), both drawn in 1950 and acquired by or given to the Smithsonian Institution in 1969 & 1966 respectively; and a gouache and ink on board portrait by Ernest Hamlin Baker (1889-1975), drawn in 1946 and given to the Smithsonian Institution in 1978 by Time magazine. Besides these there are a few portraits in private hands: Emil Orlik (1870-1932) drew Einstein's portrait in 1917 (as well as producing photo portraits and prints of Einstein in the 1920s), and Alfons Blomme (1889-1979), the Belgian painter, met Einstein in De Haan in 1933, and painted his portrait during Einstein's brief period of exile there.
